Federal Discrimination Laws
Workplace discrimination law under Federal statutes and regulations, also known as anti-discrimination or equal opportunity laws, have been established by acts of Congress. Federal discrimination laws make it illegal for employers to discriminate against employees and job applicants in any aspects of employment based on age, disability, national origin, race, religion or gender.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforces the most significant Federal discrimination laws related to employment. States are permitted to enact and enforce their own employment discrimination laws that include or, in the case of New York, expand the minimum protections afforded under Federal discrimination laws.
